What is the Bowen Technique and how does it Work?
*A Bowen treatment is not a massage. It consists of various gentle and specific moves - mostly using fingers and thumbs - on muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves, thus sending signals throughout the body and to the brain.
* The Bowen technique can easily be done through very light clothing and if necessary, can also be performed on a patient who is sitting in a chair.
*Some of these moves initiate responses from the central nervous system which not only result in a deep sense of overall relaxation, but also allow the body to reset and heal itself. Results can be dramatic, even from the first treatment.
In some more detail...
* Bowen 'moves' generate small electrical impulses with great healing capabilities. For example, much research has shown that passing a small electrical current over a broken bone can significantly increase the rate of healing in that bone. Furthermore, a small current of a different frequency can increase healing when passed through damaged soft tissues.
* The Bowen technique also works on stretch receptors and proprioreceptors, thereby 'waking up' the system and allowing the brain to recalibrate it's awareness of problems within the body.
* Bowen can also substantially soften scar tissue resulting from old injuries - in muscles and connective tissue. It also has profound effects on fascia, a very important membrane which covers and connects muscles and provides flexibility and support.
* Some Bowen moves also act on spinal reflexes, which in turn can have an affect on internal organs. Therefore, beneficial effects are not only felt for musculo-skeletal problems, but can also be evident on organ function and the digestive, immune and hormonal systems.
* The Bowen technique is gentle enough to be used on anyone from the newborn to the elderly, including expectant mothers and the seriously ill. Unlike most other successful forms of therapy, the Bowen technique does not involve any forceful manipulation, needles or chemicals.
* Due to the absence of any force, the effects of Bowen therapy tend to last a great deal longer than most other forms of therapy. This is because the body 'puts things where it knows they should go'.
* A treatment session tends to last from half an hour to an hour, usually lying on a bed or treatment couch. Important breaks are allowed in-between certain steps to enable the body to process the given information.
* At least two or three treatment sessions about a week apart are recommended to start with. Often only a few sessions are needed to address the presenting problem.
* Each treatment session with me is currently £35
